Seasoning Salt - Homemade!
It’s the first of November as I write this and the time when I seriously start thinking about Christmas gifts, the rest of the year I just ponder 😄. It may be a bit of an old fashioned idea but homemade gifts are still my favorite, yes - it’s easier to just have Amazon deliver, but there’s something about the personal touch of giving that I love. This year’s idea - Homemade Seasoning Salt!
On a recent trip to Italy I was able to attend a culinary class and one of the amazing things we created was homemade seasoning salt. Fresh herbs - parsley, marjoram, thyme, and rosemary were selected and cut from the garden, then chopped together with a tablespoon or so of sea salt. We used a tool called a Mezzaluna, but your knife will work just fine! The seasoning salt was used in the dishes we cooked and then it was spread out on paper towels and left to dry for a couple of days. The seasoning salt is then stored in airtight containers, kept handy in the kitchen, and used throughout the winter to provide fresh herb flavor to an assortment of dishes.
The growing season is about over for my herb bed as we approach winter, so I cut parsley, oregano, and rosemary to use in this seasoning salt. Other great additions would be marjoram and thyme, but this is a flexible idea so you use what you have! Chop, chop, chop, and then when I got tired of chopping I tried a small food processor, yup - that works too!
Store this for yourself in a simple mason jar, or package up in more attractive containers for gifts this year. Enjoy - and Happy Giving!!
